Lovenox is a subcutaneous injection containing a medication called an anticoagulant or blood thinner. Anticoagulants are used to help prevent blood clots. You will likely be taking this medication during the latter part of your cycle to protect the embryo after your transfer occurs. Some women with a history of blood clots or certain genetic changes or medical conditions that increase the risk of blood clots may need to take Lovenox during the stimulation phase as well. Blood thinners are used in IVF treatments to reduce the risk of harmful blood clots that may cause a medical complication during hormonal treatment or during pregnancy. A blood thinner may be prescribed near the end of the treatment cycle in order to support the embryo after the transfer and to protect against clots during early pregnancy or during the hormonal treatment in women with underlying medical conditions.
Administration
Step 1: Gather your supplies and wash your hands
1 minutes
- You will need: Prefilled Lovenox syringe and attached needle, alcohol pads and sharps disposal.
Step 2: Prep your needle
1 minutes
- The prefilled syringe requires very little prep. Take the cap off of the needle and be sure your medication is clear and contains no debris.
Step 3: Pick your injection site
1 minutes
- Choose a spot on your abdomen about 2 inches on either side of your belly button. Clean it with an alcohol pad and let air dry.
Step 4: Administer the injection
1 minutes
- Take a pinch of skin around your injection site and hold the syringe at a 90 degree angle. Steadily, push the needle all the way in and release your pinch of skin. Push the plunger down until all of the medication is gone. Then withdraw the needle.
Dispose of your syringe in your sharps disposal. You did it!
