I wish someone told me years ago that this simple movement would help me get the regular pain-free periods I was looking for. I know it sounds crazy, but let me explain the science as a hormone health coach. In a nutshell, one of the main root cause drivers of missing irregular or painful periods is chronic stress. Essentially, you're living in survival mode or the sympathetic nervous system state, pumping out stress hormones like cortisol. Now, unfortunately, your body uses progesterone, a key reproductive hormone, to build cortisol. So the more stressed you are, the increased chance your periods will not be regular or pain-free. Somatic rocking like this engages the body in rhythmic, repetitive movements, which tells your body that you're in control, there's no threat, and that you're safe. So basically, it helps switch you out of survival mode and back into the nervous system state of rest and digest, the parasympathetic nervous system state, which means your body can allocate resources away from survival and back to balance. You'll know it's working when you yawn, sigh, swallow, get a shiver down your spine, or maybe even shed a tear. Of course, this is just one piece of the period puzzle, but it is a big one.
