Hi there, I am Dr. Amanda Herleman and I am a fertility specialist with ORM Fertility. I am here today to debunk the myth that Mucinex enhances fertility. So what exactly is Mucinex? Mucinex is an over-the-counter cough medication. The active ingredient in Mucinex is called guafinesin, which works by thinning mucus in the airways of the body. The thought behind its use in fertility is connected to some very limited studies, like two in the last 30 or so years, on the drug indicating that it may thin the cervical mucus in females, allowing the sperm to more easily penetrate the cervix, or that when taken by males, it may help improve the quality or quantity of the sperm. Not only is there essentially no data to confirm these claims, or explain how guafinesin might actually improve fertility, old studies likely have confounding variables that make the data hard to interpret. So, there just is not enough data to support using Mucinex for fertility.
