How to Get Smooth Skin When You Have Keratosis Pilaris (KP): A Real Editor's Routine

How to Get Smooth Skin When You Have Keratosis Pilaris (KP): A Real Editor's Routine

I've had KP (keratosis pilaris) on the backs of my arms since middle school, and for years I just accepted the bumps as "my skin's personality." Then I actually learned what was going on and started treating it right, and wow, the difference.

Quick science-y catch-up for you: keratosis pilaris (aka the "chicken skin" thing) shows up as small, rough and scaly bumps because dead skin cells build up and clog hair follicles. It's completely harmless — dermatologists will tell you that a million times — but I get it; it's still annoying to feel every time you put on a tank top.

Here's what actually moved the needle for me: a routine that mixes exfoliation and moisturizing, since a well-balanced routine that uses exfoliating products and moisturizes regularly can help. I lean on chemical exfoliants like lactic acid, salicylic acid, and urea, which help remove excess dead skin cells, and I always follow up with something hydrating so I'm not just drying my skin out. Lactic acid has been my personal favorite — it's shown real results, but with any new routine it’s best to consult your healthcare team!

My current rotation:

Give it a few weeks of consistency — your skin (and your tank-top confidence) will thank you.
