Hi, my name is Dr. Katherine Pongrola and I am 1 of the fertility specialists at IVFMD in Miami, which is part of the Prelude Network. If you're new to fertility treatments, you may be overwhelmed by the number of abbreviations and different procedures we have during your testing and treatments. So I wanted to explain some of the most common procedures that you may face during your evaluation. Hysteroscopy is a procedure or a very small surgery.

This is done by inserting a tiny, tiny camera, for example, even smaller than the tip of a pen. This tiny camera is inserted through the cervix and into the uterus, and it has a light so we can see. It allows us to see the inside part of the uterus. Is there a polyp? Are there scar tissue?

And we get a great view of the inside of the uterus. Hysteroscopy can be both diagnostic, meaning just looking and getting more information, or it can be therapeutic, or we can actually treat what we see. The length of the procedure depends on how much pathology is considered minimally invasive, meaning there's no incisions or cuts on the belly. This is just a procedure through the vagina, through the cervix, and recovery is quite fast. The uterus recovers within your next period cycle.
